5 Cold Weather Recipes We Can’t Wait to Try This Fall

Football, plaid, pumpkin spice everything—these are just a few of the many reasons we love fall in New York. The other reasons keep us buoyant and busy, too. There is apple picking in the Hudson Valley, leaf-and-pie-peeping on Long Island’s North Fork, and plenty of fun fall festivals in between. We even look forward to the day the temperature drops and we get to dust off our Crockpot for a day of Netflix and Slow Cooking.

And now, thanks to Peapod, we don’t even have to head to the grocery store first.

1. Smoky Slow Cooker Chili

Photography by Jeanette’s Healthy Living for Peapod

Is there anything better than a hot bowl of chili on a cold autumn night? We think not. Our plan is to order all of the necessary ingredients for this one ahead of Football Sunday, then wake up and get prepping in time to watch the Giants and/or Jets. A big bowl of chili will be the perfect post-game consolation—and since we’re talking about the Giants and Jets, we’ll definitely need the comfort food.

2. Black Bean Sloppy Joes

Meatless isn’t just an amazing podcast by Edible alum Alicia Kennedy—it’s also how we like to eat on Mondays. This recipe, ready in just 30 minutes, will help us stay on our meat-free track. The best part? The ingredients for this meal won’t set you back; we spent just $10.38 (or $1.73 per serving) by ordering everything from Peapod. Nothing ‘sloppy’ about that.

3. Cinnamon Banana Bread Pudding

If you’re anything like us, you often buy bananas just to watch them turn brown. It’s just—well, they always seem like a good idea at the time; like, ‘This is finally going to be the week I eat a banana instead of a bagel each morning for breakfast.’ In reality, we choose the bagel almost every single time. Which is why we’re especially amped to try this recipe, which will put our overripe bananas to good use while making our kitchen smell cinnamon-sweet. It’s a lovely bonus that, thanks to Peapod, we don’t even have to leave the house to acquire said bananas.

4. Slow Cooker Mexican Corn and Chicken Soup

It’s been said that chicken soup soothes the soul—but when combined with the flavors of Mexican street corn? It soothes the soul and ignites the taste buds. We can’t wait to make a big batch of this soup as part of our weekly meal prep, and then enjoy bowls of it all week for dinner and lunch.

5. Kid Friendly Tater Tot Casserole

We eat tater tots all year, but if you’re the sort of person who doesn’t we have great news: You likely won’t need to wear a bathing suit again until next year. So, embrace the tot. This recipe is a great place to start. Just brown some ground beef in a skillet and then add it—alongside diced tomatoes, cream of chicken soup, and tater tots—to your slow cooker. Three-and-a-half hours later, voila!
