Winter-Schminter: Warm Up with the Latin Food and Boogaloo Dance Party at Brooklyn Botanic Garden

One of the big stars at the BBG party next month

Just because winter has set in doesn’t mean all signs of life have disappeared from the Brooklyn Botanic Garden–in fact, nothing could be farther from the truth. Especially on Friday, February 10 from 8pm to midnight, when you can be transported to Latin America at LUSH, an evening of tastes and sounds (and dancing) in celebration of BBG’s collection of 6,000 (and counting) tropical orchids.

For starters the party will be fuled with an open bar of fragrant tropical juices and cocktails, empanaditas from Purple Yam (in case you missed the profile we did on this Ditmas Park Filipino restaurant, check it out here), fruit paletas from La Newyorkina (our  NY1 segment on her icy-good Mexican pops for your viewing please here) Latin-inspired confections from Sunset Park’s Tumbador Chocolate, more Mexican treats from Chavela’s taqueria in Crown Heights and tropical fruit bites from Peeled Snacks.

Art will also come into play with artist Aaron Birk who will create custom leaf portraits of guests who will also be able to meet orchid curator Dave Horak, who’ll give special tours of orchid care and growing rooms that aren’t usually open to the public.

DJ Turmix, Barcelona-born and New York-based, will be on hand to spin some of hottest Latin tunes.  Spanglish Fly, one of only two boogaloo bands in the country will also be at the event to transport you back in time to the music of the dance halls of the 1960s in East Harlem.  Plus WFMU’s Mr. Fine Wine will share his collection of original 45s to keep the party going.

Sound too good to pass up? Find out the complete break-down of the evening and purchase your tickets here!
