What Not to Miss at the NYC FoodFilmFest This October

Melon smashing, a scene from the short film “Zergut,” screening on food porn night

Last week the folks at NYC Food Film Festival finally posted the rundown for season five of the annual event celebrating shorts about our favorite subject. The fest takes place from October 13 through 16 at Tribeca Cinemas: There are 21 films on all aspects of cooking, farming, dining and eating. (Yes, there’s even a doc on the famed pizza maker Dom DeMarco from DiFara’s in Midwood, Brooklyn.) And of course there are the parties! These three look mighty tasty to us:

1. A Taco Takedown on the afternoon of Saturday October 15 hosted by Brooklyn cooking competition master Matt Timms. His contests are usually for the general public (check his Bacon Takedown at the Bell House the very next day) but this one is only open to the pros: You get to eat the results. Plus Rockaway Tacos will be serving in The City (meaning Manhattan) for the first time ever, alongside the tortilla masters Nixtamal from Queens.

2. The Food Porn Party comes later Saturday night, featuring seven flicks and a show of in your face imagery of edibles, such as the exploding watermelon shown above. Chef Brad Farmerie will be serving food from the exceedingly new space he just opened called Saxon + Parole.

3. The “Edible Adventure #3,” featuring a documentary on the over-the-top Peruvian feast called Mistura. (250,000 attendees, the country’s top chefs and food producers like a guy who grows 35 kinds of pink and blue speckled spuds.) The Peruvian tourism board is helping the organizers prepare what’s shown on screen.
