Calling All Latke Experts: Enter Your Recipe in This Year’s Latke Festival at BAM

When fall rolls around, do you pull out Bubby’s oil-stained latke recipe or do you make up your own modern version using beets from the Greenmarket? Are you a garnish purist, strictly sour cream or applesauce for you, or do you jazz your latkes up with jalapeños, strawberries or sriracha? We’re looking for the best of the borough for our December 10th Latke Festival at BAM, hosted with Great Performances.

According to the Wall Street Journal, Latkes are a “Proletariat Treat.” Agreed!

Someone just sent us a link to Ralph’s Gardner’s column in the Wall Street Journal this week. The writer tours the 9/11 Memorial in Lower Manhattan with Michael Arad, its designer, but kicks off the piece at the Latke Festival we helped co-host back in December. Arad happened to be one of our-co-judges, which crowned the smoked fish-topped potato pancakes from Almond as the winner.

Missing Our Latke Cook-Off at BAM Tonight? The Daily News Has a Few of the Winning Recipes

Tonight we’ll be co-hosting the sold-out third annual Latke Cook-off at BAM, where 15 chefs and Dori Fern, the talented Edible Brooklyn reader who won our amateur recipe contest, will compete in the contest to crown the greatest Hanukah potato pancake of all. If you’re missing out, don’t worry, the Daily News did a preview piece on the event yesterday, and scored not just the recipe for Fern’s “Double-Happiness Latkes topped with Five-Spice Duck Confit” but those of a few of her fellow contestants, too.

Now that we’ve tested our spud-mashing skills at Thanksgiving, it’s time for those of us celebrating Hanukah to turn our attention to the potato pancake. Specifically, the third annual Latke Festival Edible Brooklyn is putting on with Great Performances at the Brooklyn Academy of Music on December 19th. In case you missed the call for entries in our current issue, we wanted to let you know we’re on the lookout for fantastic recipes for latkes. That’s potato pancakes, for all you goyim out there, those crispy-fried patties traditionally made during Chanukah–and, for the third year in a row, at the catering company Great Performances’ annual city Latke Festival and cook-off. We’re co-hosts of this years, which will arrive at BAM for a night of grease-splattered goodness on December 19.
