From our organizers:
For years, we’ve fought against the idea that a woman’s place is “in the kitchen.” But what if we want to be there — not because it’s what society expects of us but because it empowers us?
Even though baking is often associated with femininity, men dominate the high-end pastry chef occupation. But women are here, rolling up our sleeves, sprinkling flour, kneading dough, providing for ourselves, our families, and the public. We’re taking back the kitchen, the oven, the whisk, the rolling pin, the piping bag. All of it.
Join us for a conversation about the powerful, awe-inspiring, life-sustaining process of baking moderated by Vallery Lomas, winner of the Great American Baking Show, with Natasha Pickowicz, pastry chef of Flora Bar and Café Altro Paradiso, Zoe Kanan, head baker at New York’s Studio and Simon & The Whale at the Freehand Hotel, and Erin McDowell, author of The Fearless Baker and Baking Consultant at Large for Food52. You could call them the HBIC (head bakers in charge).
Plus, we’ll have a live cake-decorating demonstration inspired by our discussion by Rose McAdoo, cake artist-activist extraordinaire of Whisk Me Away Cakes.
And we’ll have delicious eats from La Palapa through our partner Caviar and lots of baked goodies made by our panelists.
