Have you ever read a food label and wondered if it was entirely accurate? The truth is that the FDA does not have the resources to check every food item on a regular basis, particularly if it is from a small company or local supplier. This class is all about empowering consumers to investigate what they eat.
Powerful DNA-based technologies are now accessible to everyone. You will learn how to extract DNA from animal, plant, and fungal samples, and use techniques such as DNA barcoding and PCR to determine if that goat cheese is really from goats, if your sushi is the wrong fish, if your soybeans are GMO, if that hot dog is really all-beef, and test an item from your own kitchen. We’ll also give you instructions on how to set up a home testing lab. No previous science experience needed!
