Checking out books just got a lot sweeter. On the morning of March 14 — Pi(e) Day, of course — the Gowanus-based Four & Twenty Blackbirds cut the ribbon at their first branch location, at the Brooklyn Public Library.

The sister duo behind the pie shop, Melissa and Emily Eisen, were there to welcome guests with library president Linda Johnson as hungry Brooklynites, reveling in pie for breakfast, sipped Stumptown coffee (the cups read “Keep reading, there’s pie!”) and wrote “pi-kus”:

At the library,
This writer ate her fair share
Of lemon chess pie.

Café tables were clustered with paper plates of the pie that has made Four & Twenty Blackbirds so beloved: salted caramel apple, black bottom oat, lemon chess and salty honey. The café, which is open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday, has a menu of savory baked goods (designed by the brothers John and Mike Poiarkoff, who are, respectively, the chefs at The Pines and Vinegar Hill House) also in the works.
