If you ever lamented the lack of a fully sustainable seafood market in New York (Brooklyn, specifically), then you weren’t the only one. Restaurant industry veterans Bianca Piccillo and Mark Usewicz are now looking to “kickstart” their Mermaid’s Garden storefront.
This year, in addition to the veggies, fruits and eggs we always get in our CSA, we signed up for a biweekly tub of Ronnybrook butter and a monthly share of “meat” from Mint Creek Farm. I put it in quotes to emphasize how little I knew about the carnivorous delights that awaited me.
If you haven’t signed up for a CSA yet, you should consider joining one of the New York City Coalition Against Hunger’s sites, which make healthy, organic, fresh vegetables particularly affordable and accessible to community members of all income levels.
